Article Wedding Photography A Guide to Select Wedding Invitations

The wedding invitation is the first wedding contact a couple makes with guests attending a wedding. This invitation should be able to convey the wedding theme, its colours, the style and more than all the couple's personality to the person who receives it. An invitation conveys a lot more than a person ever imagine. Therefore, design the invitation with great care, and make sure to use proper wordings.

1.  Selecting the invitation

Browse internet for different wedding invitations and find several designs that suits the wedding theme. Get an idea of different colors, shapes and styles used. There are many to choose from. Together with the printing company decide the type of paper, texture and font that best suits the design picked.

2. Invitation Wordings
    • Start the wording by mentioning who is going to host the wedding/homecoming
    • Then write a line inviting or requesting your guests presence
    • List down the names of the couple. Bride’s name comes first followed by the groom’s name
    • Give the date, time and the location
    • Write R.S.V.P at the bottom of the invitation or include a separate reply card

3. Order Invitation

Many couples tend to order their wedding invitations online. If this is the case always make sure to get a sample of the design before placing the actual order. This is because real life colors and display texture significantly varies from the colors and texture displayed on screen. Place the order at least 4 months prior to the wedding to allow invitations to be printed and delivered on time. For handmade invitations place the order as quickly as possible. The name says it, they are made by hand.

4. Invitation distribution

In a traditional Sri Lankan wedding there is an auspicious date and a time at which the first invitation is distributed. Usually, the exact date is not disclosed to anyone unless this custom is satisfied. This is done to make sure no one is invited before the given auspicious time.

Invite guests at least 3-4 weeks prior to the wedding. Leave them enough time to reserve the date and get prepared. If overseas guests are expected post the invitations far in advance. They have a lot of planning to do.
