Go through the internet, bridal magazines etc. to get an idea of the latest wedding ring designs. Visit jewelry shops and try on rings of different widths and shapes to see what looks best on your finger.
Wedding band pairs are quite popular today. Try to select a design that suits both the bride and the groom. If the bride has an engagement ring, the wedding ring should go with it.
Size of the wedding band
The size of the ring depends on the size of the finger and the band width needed. Usually men's rings have a width of around 8mm to 12mm while ladies prefer their rings to have a width of around 5mm to 7mm. There is no rule saying that the width should fall within any of the sizes given, the size simply depends on the couple’s taste. However, remember that the metal weight should increase as the width gets wider. Low weight implies low thickness and the ring may bend or deform easily in such cases.
The Metal – Silver, Gold or other?
For centuries, yellow gold had been the most preferred choice for any type of jewelry in Sri Lanka. In the modern times however, platinum and white gold have become just as popular metal choices for wedding rings because of their rich silvery colour.
White gold is silver in colour – the preferred colour choice of the youth and is much more valuable than silver. The metal Platinum looks like white gold, but it is more durable than white or yellow gold and is good for everyday wear and tear.
Jewelry using yellow gold is usually crafted in 22 Karat while white gold jewelry is done in 18 Karat. This is because the wedding rings are expected to be precious and valuable. If the budget is very tight you can always go for a lower Karat value. You need not worry as 14k gold offers better hardness as compared to 22k gold.
It is also possible to use a combination of these metals to get a two colour (or even a tri colour) wedding band. The style is very in today.
Where to buy?
Ask friends and family for recommended jewelers to make the bands. You may get them from high caliber jewelry shops that are very reliable, but the prices are of course in the top range. If you are on a tight budget, get the jewelry made from small jewelers. They charge less. Just, make sure to get recommendations first to assess the jeweler’s reliability.
Also, don’t forget to check for heirlooms. There might be a beautiful band from a great grandparent passed on through generations waiting only for you. If your parents are willing to pass it on to you, ‘you are in great luck’
